Soca Warrior released early
05/05/2006: Wrexham have honoured Soca Warrior Dennis Lawrence for his contribution this season by letting the tall defender join his World Cup 2006 squad earlier that expected.
The 32-year-old, a former soldier, should have been playing against Darlington on Saturday but has been released by his club in a goodwill gesture with boss Denis Smith saying it would have been unfair to risk him in a meaningless game.
"We are playing for nothing other than pride against Darlington," Smith said of the situation.
"You'd be asking a lot of him to risk injury and ruin his World Cup chances.
"You have to be reasonable but if we had a chance of the play-offs Dennis would still be here.
Your club comes first but I am being sensible."
Lawrence, whose goal for Trinidad against Bahrain put the Soca Warriors through to this summer's World Cup finals, joined the North Wales side in 2001, a month after making his Trinidad and Tobago debut against Netherland Antilles.
