Smicer out as Czechs win

01/06/2006: Czech Republic midfielder Vladamir Smicer has lost his battle to be fit for this year's World Cup.

The Bordeauz star has been troubled with a knee injury for some time but admitted defeat less than ten days before the tournament start on June 9 in Germany.

The former Liverpool football player has been out of action since March and though the news is shattering for both the player and the national side it had been expected.

Coach Karel Bruckner is expected to replace Smicer with the Glasgow Rangers star Libor Sionko.

The news overshadowed the Czech Republic's recent win against Costa Rica when a Vratislav Lokvenc 82nd minute goal sealed the result.

Bruckner rested most of his key stars in the dull game but intends to field his full strength line-up against Trinidad and Tobago on saturday with recent Arsenal signing Tomas Rosicky being his only major doubt.

"I rested some players like Pavel Nedved as I don't want to overload them, all the teams have been doing that," said Bruckner.

"I will try to use the best possible line-up in the game on Saturday, but even if Rosicky is not ready to play in this game, I believe he will be fit for the game against the USA and that is positive."
