Skoko strikes to sink Greeks
25/05/2006: In front of 95,000 fans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the Socceroos beat European Champions Greece 1-0 in their latest World Cup 2006 friendly game.
The decisive strike came from Josip Skoko in the 15th minute of a solid display from the Australians.
Despite missing key players Tim Cahill and Harry Kewell it was in the midfield that the Socceroos dominated, with Mark Bresciano, Jason Culina, Vince Grella and man of the match Skoko all outstanding.
Skoko's strike from outside the box hit the top left-hand corner of the net with the Wigan Athletic player, who has spent most of the season on loan to Stoke City, pleased that recent hard work on the training ground had come to fruition.
"It was a good performance if you also take into consideration how hard we've been working the past three days in training," he said.
"I think there's a lot of work to do still, but we showed tonight we're well on the way."
Australia play two more warm-up matches before their first World Cup game against Japan - facing Holland in Rotterdam on June 4 and Liechtenstein in Ulm, Germany three days later.
