Shock recall for Nowotny
21/04/2006: German coach Juergen Klinsmann has surprised many by asking Jens Nowotny to attend a pre-World Cup training session.
The 32-year-old has not played for the national team since 2004 but recent performances for his club Bayer Leverkusen has encouraged Klinsmann to add him to a list of World Cup possibles.
His experience would certainly be a boon for the defence with the Germans having been expected to field a young backline.
"We've been watching Jens closely in recent weeks and have been quite impressed with his performance," said assistant coach Joachim Loew.
"We now want to take a closer look in the fitness tests."
Eighteen players have been called for the fitness test with Bayern Munich, Schalke and Arsenal players all excused due to club commitments.
Nowotny recently announced his intention to leave Bayer Leverkusen after 10 years service at the club.
