Shinji Ono
04/05/2006: The ever versatile Shinji Ono will be flying the flag for the Japanese midfield in the World Cup this year.
Ono began his career at the tender age of 13, when he was selected to play for Japan's under-16 national team. His abilities helped Japan pull off the title at the 6th Under-16 Asia Youth Championship in 1994, held in Qatar.
The midfielder's youth honours continued, winning the Under-17 National Championship as a part of the Shizuoka side in 1996 and 1997, while winning the All-Japan Youth Championship in 1997.
As a professional player, Ono has fluttered between his native J-League and European football. He began in 1998 Urawa Red Diamonds, scoring 20 goals in his three year stay, before heading to Feyenoord in 2001.
In his first season, Ono helped the Dutch side win the UEFA Cup, but was later beset with injuries which caused him to miss much of the 2004/2005 season. Failing to stay in European football, Ono headed back to Urawa Red this year.
Japan coach Zico has announced that Ono will be appearing in the Kirin Cup squad. The tournament will feature Bulgaria and Scotland, and will take place on May 13th.
