Shakes not given up hope
18/04/2006: Soca Warriors star Ricky Shakes has not given up his World Cup dream despite not making the provisional 24-man squad.
The 21-year-old has been named on standby after missing out on a place in Trinidad and Tobago's final squad.
The midfielder intends to stay phyically and mentally strong up to the finals in case other players suffer the misfortune of injury before the tournament that starts in Germany on June 9.
The former Bolton man wants to make sure he is top of the list if a phone call comes.
Shakes knows that some good performances for his club side Swindon Town could help influence Soca Warriors coach Leo Beenhakker if a replacement is needed.
Shakes said: "Yes, I'm disappointed but at the end of the day I'm still young.
"They've sent me a letter to say I'm on standby at the moment.
"Fingers crossed, anything can happen, they could call me up late.
"There's no booking holidays for me at this stage.
"I have to be ready right up until June 9 to see if the call comes.
