Ergic returns to Serbia squad
16/05/2006: The only real surprise in Serbia and Montenegro coach Ilija Petkovic's World Cup squad was the inclusion of Basle midfielder Ivan Ergic.
The playmaker, who has battled disease this season, will act as cover in midfield.
Petkovic said: "He is a versatile player and we can rotate around the midfield but, most importantly, he is ideal cover for playmakers Zvonimir Vukic and Sasa Ilic.
The 25-year-old has battled with mononucleosis for two years and his recovery is a huge boost for the squad.
Petkovic has stuck broadly to the team that helped Serbia and Montenegro qualify for their first World Cup Finals.
"This group of players will show unity and determination and hopefully give the whole nation plenty to cheer about.
"We can't wait for the finals to begin and I can say this is the biggest test of my career as manager.
"I have unreserved faith in the lads as each and every one of them has earned a place in the squad through hard work and the performances in the qualifying campaign."
Much of this team's sucess in the tournament will depend upon star strikers Mateja Kezman and leading scorer Savo Milosevic (both of whom had indifferent careers in England) but their chances were dealt a blow at the World Cup draw when they were selected to compete in the 'Group of Death' against Argentina, Holland and the Ivory Coast
