Serbia suffer striker blow

27/05/2006: Serbia striker Mirko Vucinic has been ruled out of the World Cup after picking up a knee injury.

The Italian-based forward picked up a knock in Tuesday's Under-21 international fixture against Germany and doctors have decided that he would be unable to play any part in the World Cup.

"We need a bit of time and we will name a replacement for Vucinic in the next few days," said Serbia coach Ilija Petkovic

"We will call up a forward as we have to have five fit strikers for the tournament."

With a friendly on Saturday against Uruguay, Petkovic is trying to put the injured player out of his mind.

"This will be an excellent opportunity for us to get a picture of South American football.

"It will be a tough match because they are a skilful team."

Mirko Vucinic has been in Italy since a teenager. He enjoyed his most prolific season in 2004-5 when scoring 19 goals in 28 appearances but was slightly out of form this season just gone managing just 9 goals in 34 games.

Seen as the future of Serbia football, Vucinic was not a certain starter for Serbia but may have been given a chance in the latter stages of games.

Serbia, who recently split from Montenegro, face a World Cup group containing Ivory Coast, Argentina and Netherlands.
