Scolari happy with form
22/06/2006: Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari hailed his squad players after his side booked its place in the second round as Group D winners.
With Portugal's progression already assured, Scolari made a number of changes to his starting line-up for the Mexico clash even though top spot was up for grabs.
Deco, Cristiano Ronaldo, Costinha and Pauleta were left out as they all had a yellow card hanging over their heads.
However, Portugal made a bright start to the game and opened up a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Nuno Maniche and Simao Sabrosa. However, Francisco Fonseca pulled one back for Mexico and despite having a man sent off, the central Americans piled the pressure on Portugal but just came up short.
'Big Phil' was happy to make it three wins on the bounce and was pleased other players coming into the side proved their worth to the team.
Scolari said: "This match was important for two reasons.
"I left a number of players out to give them more recovery time.
"Those who came in did their job well and showed they are valued members of the squad.
"I liked the result best as it put us in an ideal position.
"Maybe we should have passed the ball around more but we made small mistakes which are sometimes common in Portugal."
