Brazil star defends slow start

20/06/2006: Midfielder Gilberto Silva is not concerned at criticism levelled towards Brazil and claims expectations heaped on them are too high.

The Arsenal man, who came off the bench in the second half of their 2-0 win against Australia on Sunday, recognises that Brazil have hardly set the World Cup alight with fantastic performances and a glut of goals, but claims they have done what they have to.

The reigning world champions have already qualified for the second round and, barring a complete disaster against Japan in their final game, will top Group D.

Nevertheless critics of the side have been sharpening their knives in anticipation of a slip-up, but Silva claims whatever they do some people will never be happy and feels the pressure on Brazil to perform is greater than any other side competing in Germany.

He said: "When we win people criticise and say we did not play well. If we play well people expect more from us but it's because it is Brazil.

"Everyone wants Brazil to score a lot of goals in every game. It's not as simple as that but we've done well."

He added: "The game against Australia was difficult. We controlled it and now I think we will improve as that performance was better than our first one against Croatia.

"Brazil can never relax. If we relax we know what that means.

"There is a lot of pressure. We need to be ready.

"All the people expect a lot of us but we are all used to it."
