Scotland fans - Who do you support?

10/06/2006: Alex Salmond, the leader of the Scottish National Party, will be supporting Trinidad and Tobago at this year's World Cup in Germany.

The Soca Warriors face Scotland's oldest rivals England in Nuremburg on Tuesday June 15 but Salmond has denied that his new allegience has anything to do with the fact they will be facing their bitterest rivals.

"I'm for the Soca Warriors, but for years I was the only practising Anglophile in Scottish politics, said Salmond.

"I don't support teams against England, but I think Trinidad and Tobago have some interesting Scottish players playing for them.

"That is the nearest we are getting to the World Cup."

The Warriors squad players who ply their trade in Scotland are Russell Latapy who is player/coach at Falkirk, Marvin Andrews who turns out for Rangers, Kelvin Jack and Colin Samuel of Dundee United and St Johnstone's Jason Scotland.

Comments on: Scotland fans - Who do you support?

08/06/2006: I find it refreshing that Salmon is an Anglophile. There is nothing more annoying than seeing a person from Scotland revelling in someone else's misfortune which will happen when England lose. It's time for the true Scots to reject this bigoted attitude and be ready to comfort and give solace to the English when they get knocked out. Good on you Salmon!

08/06/2006: Alex Salmond is quite right but for other reasons. Why would any Scotland fan support England? We're NOT English. All this nonsense on the TV just now about how awful we are for not supporting you, I just don't get it. Norway and Sweden used to be a united country - would Norway fans support Sweden if their team gets put out? Can't see it. And there is no way in the world that any English fan would EVER support Scotland.

08/06/2006: Alex Salmond is like mosts Scots - bitter and twisted because his own country isn't good enough and I'm not just talking football. Never forget who funds your football failures up there and be grateful that you've got at least one decent team you can cheer on.

08/06/2006: I disagree with the disturbing notion that any English fan would EVER support Scotland. Typical nonsense. I'm a football fan and like watching it on TV - when Scotland have played in previous World Cups I have wanted them to win. It's good to see players that you know. The Scottish seem to have this thing of WANTING England to lose - that is different to not supporting them. I was there in front of my telly in 1974 and 1978 watching because Scotland qualified and we didn't. You were the better team at the time. It was all I had - I never wanted you to lose.

08/06/2006: You were probably only watching us cos it was the only way you were allowed to stay up beyond your bedtime! Think about this, if every time the word FOOTBALL was mentioned on TV since 74, the commentators (on so called BRITISH TV) started going on about how great Scotland were to qualify and then banged on and on about every goal and every comment and this had been going on SINCE 74, you'd get a bit p***ed off too wouldn't you? Well that is EXACTLY what we've had to put up with since 1966 and NOW, the coverage is wall to wall and we can't get away from it. And if England WIN this time, we've got another forty years AT LEAST to hear about it so yeah, I want you to lose - it will at least improve your conversational skills cos you'll have to think of more than one thing to talk about.

08/06/2006: The point about the media coverage in 1974 is valid and it must have annoyed people. But don't blame us. It was all about money. They had to find some way to entertain the English - and take some advertising money off them. I'm glad they did it because I enjoyed 1974 and 1978 from the point of view of a child who was excited about seeing loads of programmes on telly about something I liked. Would STV/Grampian or BBC Scotland have provided such good coverage?.... but I'm probably missing the point.

08/06/2006: I don't know what point you're trying to make so maybe I'M missing it. What I was talking about was not the coverage in 1974 but the inability of English commentators to stop talking about England winning the cup in 66 SINCE 66. If you'd had to put up with us talking about 74 since the actual tournament it would drive you round the bend. So I'm not complaining about the coverage in 74 and I agree it's no doubt all about money BUT you can hardly watch a football programme without mention of it and that's nothing to do with advertising or money, just the English boasting and living off past glories. Now if they were doing that on English TV to an English audience and I happened to catch it, it probably wouldn't bother me. But it's the "national" (I call it international seeing as we're all different nations)TV coverage and the assumption when we're watching UK wide programming, that we're all English and we're all dying to hear about 1966 again. They ALWAYS talk about "us" and how "we" won in 1966 but they're broadcasting, as I said, to a UK wide audience. I don't have a clue if STV would have provided such good coverage and that's because I don't know which TV station you're comparing to.

09/06/2006: Scottish fans can scream and shout at the TV all they like if it makes them feel better - our players won't be able to hear them and they need all the leisure pursuits they can find.

09/06/2006: You're right and I LOVE it. I thought this world cup would be boring but I've got so many teams to support starting with Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday - good luck the 2Ts :-)

14/06/2006: The thing is if Scotland were in this World Cup I would also be supporting them. All these Scottish viewers whinging because our team got in & theirs didn't is down right pathetic!

22/06/2006: May I suggest to my Scottish 'friends' that the best way to shut us up would be to stop whinging and win something.

22/06/2006: A self respecting English football supporter would never support Scotland in any football match ever, not even against Germany.

23/06/2006: Poppycock! I don't have a friend or relative who doesn't cheer the Scots on when they get through. England fans shouldn't stoop to the petty pin headed jealousy shown by way too many Jocks :) This week at least five England fans have been reportedly attacked across Scotland for wearing 3-lions shirts, including a seven-year-old boy in a playground, punched in the head by a full grown 'man'...sad sad oh so very sad.

24/06/2006: You're right that the attacks on these people were wrong, it wasn't just sad, it was outrageous and completely unacceptable. And I think you'll find that Scottish politicians, footballers and ordinary people alike condemned it without reservation. I am Scottish, I will never support the England football team (cos I ain't English) and I have a laugh supporting whoever you're playing but that's a million miles away from feeling the animosity or even hatred that leads to violence. I don't resent England fans in any way and to be honest, I have a little smile on my face when you score in the world cup games. I'm pleased for my friends and family who ARE England supporters but it's fun to wind you all up and support other teams. In answer to the last person, you may cheer us on but the relationship between Scotland and England looks very different when you're in the dominant position. It's easier to give a pat on the head than it is to accept it.
