Ronaldo rejects red card claims
03/07/2006: Portugal winger Cristiano Ronaldo claims he did not ask the referee to send Wayne Rooney off during the World Cup quarter-final clash.
The Manchester United team-mates clashed when Ronaldo confronted the official after Rooney was penalised for a foul on Ricardo Carvalho on 62 minutes in Gelsenkirchen.
Portugal eventually went on to win a penalty shoot-out, with Ronaldo netting the crucial kick, to send them into the semi-finals and a clash with France.
But Ronaldo, who may be set to quit Old Trafford before the start of the new Premiership season, insists he was simply asking for the free-kick.
He said: "The English press say the referee gave a red card because I spoke but this is not true.
"I said 'ref this is foul' but I did not say 'red card' because Wayne is my friend and I play at the same team."
However England captain-elect Steven Gerrard has lashed out at the effeminate star who sprinted towards referee Horatio Elizondo shouting: "Did you see that?" after Rooney had raked his studs into Ricardo Carvalho.
Gerrard said: "I saw that, and if it was one of my team-mates I'd be absolutely disgusted in him because there's no need for that.
"I've seen Ronaldo going over giving the card and I think he's bang out of order."
Rooney turned and pushed Ronaldo away and Argentinian referee Elizondo instantly produced the red card.
Ronaldo turned and winked at his team-mates.
Gerrard said: "I think that sums him up as a person.
"If I was playing against my team-mates from Liverpool and they were involved in a situation like that, I'd never try and get them sent off."
Gerrard thought England should have been awarded a free-kick for a foul on Rooney before the flashpoint.
The Liverpool skipper said: "He had four or five Portuguese men all over him and I walked away thinking we were going to get a free-kick.
"Wayne Rooney won't get any blame from me because I love him and he's done so much for this team. He's going to do so much in the future."

Comments on: Ronaldo rejects red card claims
02/07/2006: What a pile of shit.He asked for it and everyone knows it.What a dick.
02/07/2006: He is not going to be able to show his lady's face in England after what he has done. With friends like that who need enemies.
02/07/2006: Boo hoo hoo...
02/07/2006: He was winking at his coach after Rooney was sent off.
02/07/2006: Crucify him....
02/07/2006: Get a life, England fans!
02/07/2006: Straight up....... GET A LIFE !!! Find another Scape-Goat you failing cowards!!!
03/07/2006: your just sore loosers, you lost, get over it, looking for excuses and blaming everyone else won't alter the fact.
03/07/2006: England go home and get used to it! Rooney is like a bulldog player and he deserves what he gets!
03/07/2006: Rooney is a crybaby..he always costs his team when they least need it. the ref was in charge, and if ronaldo has that kind of influence on the official, he shouldnt be reffing...esp in the WC
03/07/2006: free kick my ass.. ronney deserved that card and I'm glad the ref stuck that in his dirty face
03/07/2006: Wow last Euro they cried now they blame Ronaldo. Look at Rooney. you talk about pretty ronaldo face? at least he doesnt look like a yellow toothed frankenstein like Rooney. I know that there is allot of inbreeding in england but damn. stop blaming others. The piece of shit kicked the player in the balls and then pushed Ronaldo. What should the ref give him, a kiss?
03/07/2006: stop your racism please you bunch of Nazi's!
03/07/2006: like i said in another post do not blame the whole of england for ones mans comments.we all know that if we cannot win on penalties than we dont deserve to go through!it was a very tense and entertaining game though! :-)
03/07/2006: Christiano Ronaldo is nothing but a sly little *$*#@!!
03/07/2006: That Ronaldo!!!!! GGGRRRRRR!! RRRR!! I hate him for a lot of reasons and Ricardo, the keeper, or watever his name is.... at Euro 2004 a couple years ago, he took his gloves off and saved a penaly and then took a penalty himself! Stupid little smart-arse. And at the World Cup game on Saturday, Ronaldo stuck his head into Rooney and smiled, making fun of him. He later winked at the coach in a ridiculous, sly way - the little get. I was watching the match with my mates, Everyone was shouting "SNAP THE LITTLE ******!" He is a horrid, sly, cheeky man with no brains!! England will never give up we will beat Portugal at sometime or another. and wwwhhoooo! is it gonna be a good game for us.
03/07/2006: Again i wonder how the English would have reacted if that same fault was on Rooney as an example?! Probably would have patted the one who did it and no-one would be talking about it right now! HahahahaFAIR PLAY my friends. To accept defeat is part of IT, did you know?
03/07/2006: If he has caused this much controversy Ronaldo can not be that thick! I want to see the wink i watched the match and completly missed it, any one know where i can get it?
03/07/2006: now Ricardo? blaming Ricardo? are you nuts?he is the best world goal keeper ever.ur just jealouse that your Mr.Robinson isnt as good as him...tell him to work harder so.
03/07/2006: bah GOOD GAME OK! no more getting on at each other please!
03/07/2006: Pro-Portuguese people: not all England fans are sore losers. We deserved to lose as we can't take penalties and Ricardo made some good saves. But Ronaldo definitely winked at his coach (you can see it on many news replays, bbc.co.uk probably has some) ...so England fans are bound to think he meant to get Rooney sent off. Rooney deserved a card for not controlling his temper, but it was not very fair play on Ronaldo's part.p.s. whoever said Rooney looked like a "yellow-toothed Frankenstein": we generally call him Shrek.
03/07/2006: LOL Shrek is what he looks like LOLI worked with kids who have more patience than his sorry ass
03/07/2006: Oh my god you guys are so thick. You guys don't know who he winked to and I didn't know it was a crime to wink so what if he winked you guys are trying to tell us they he had everything planed so he knew that sherk would kick one of our player in the balls !!! And he would get him sent off, please, get a grip so now you guys are trying to tell us that Ronaldo knew what was going to happened before it happened. HOW STUPID IS THAT.Anyways, GO PORTUGAL GO
04/07/2006: I find it amazing that the English fans can't accept the fact that Portugal won and deserved it. How the hell could Cristiano Ronaldo have predicted that Rooney was going to act like an ass and kick one of the Portuguese players in the groin? It's quite pathetic of anyone to say that Portugal didn't deserve to win. They played well against the English and Cristiano Ronaldo didn't do anything wrong - he did not conspire to get Rooney off. Winking is NOT a crime - the English should be congratulating the portuguese for a great game, a great goalie, and a great team overall. Concentrate in what can be done to improve the English team and discourage such nasty acts from someone like Rooney so that they can do better next time. AND CRISTIANO IS A FANTASTIC PLAYER - imagine how much better he'll be in a few years. Go Portugal go!! (And don't portray portuguese people in such a nasty way just because some English fans happen to be sore losers, who blame their loss on the portuguese rather than on the lack of sportsmanship by their own team players.)
04/07/2006: I dont think that Wayne Rooney deliberatley stomped on Ricardo Carvalho. He has recently denied it and The referee has also denied the fact that Ronaldo asked for a red card for Rooney. This is the only part of Football that I dont like - the arguing and unfairness. Football is a team game and some people obviosly cant accept that. I am a 12 year old England supporter and I was gutted about that match, but at least I'm not a sore-loser like some other England supporters. I SUPPORT MY TEAM!. I have high hopes for the next time we play Portugal.P.S Portugal are a fair team aswell! (oh, and I went to Portugal for a Holiday in the Algarve, a hotel called the Tivoli, anyone heard ov it??. hehe)anyway, back to football......
04/07/2006: ronney is such a lil pigglet moron that always lets his team down. now the english press is trying to find ecxuses blaiming c.ronaldo. There is one culprit here, the SWEDE. He did such a bad job, how come he wasn't fired after failing WC 2002 and EURO 2004........why was he still head coach...and for 5 million of pounds a year :S
04/07/2006: Perhaps Rooney did not deliberatley stomped on Ricardo Carvalho, however,I happen to be a fan of Man United, the team that Rooney plays for and I have noticed on many occasions that Rooney seams to play pretty durty. This leads one to assume that what he did to Ricardo carvalho was deliberate. As for Cristiano Ronaldo, he didn't do anything wrong, as the ref has already said.Besides, what's with all the animosity between English and Portuguese fans? These two countries have been friends for centuries and their people respect each other - let's keep it that way!
