Rio Ferdinand

02/06/2006: Despite some man of the match performances for England in the past, central defender Rio Ferdinand still manages to attract mixed opinions.

Although it is rare to find a defender who is so comfortable on the ball, he has a tendency to lose concentration which some suggest could cost England dear.

Until Chelsea's recent acquisition of Ukraine's front man Andriy Shevchenko, Rio's £30 million move to United from Leeds was a record for the Premiership. For the vast majority of his time at Old Trafford, Ferdinand has proved to be worth the money.

During a season in which his side were beset with terrible injury problems, Ferdinand even found himself in midfield. There are few defenders who could take up such a role.

Yet England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson ped Ferdinand for a match against Austria last year after the centre half seemed to be going through one of his careless periods.

And that shock seems to have sorted his concentration out and he is now a dead cert to start alongside John Terry.
