States skipper in fitness fight

24/05/2006: Injury-jinxed Claudio Reyna hobbled off after just 16 minutes in the first of three home friendlies in a week for the United States soccer team.

The Manchester City midfielder must await the results of a scan on his hamstring to discover if he will be able to make the tournament in Germany.

Reyna told ussoccer.com: "I'm going to get an MRI, it is close to the games, so obviously it is not the best timing but I'm hoping I've gotten away with something very minor.

"I'm optimistically thinking that it is not going to be something long term, but tomorrow I will know better."

The US captain has been plagued with injuries throughout his career.

His side lost 1-0 to a strong Moroccan outfit in the game in Nashville, with Mohamed Madihi scoring late on to quieten the crowd of over 25,000.

The United States play Venezuela on Friday and face Latvia in Hartford on Sunday before jetting in to Europe at the end of the month.

Italy, Ghana and the Czech Republic await them in the preliminary group stage.
