Ref explains Rooney red
04/07/2006: The referee who sent off Wayne Rooney during England's clash with Portugal has confirmed it was for a foul on Ricardo Carvalho.
The Manchester United striker saw red just after the hour mark in the quarter-final but it was unclear whether or not it was for the original foul or a push on Cristiano Ronaldo.
However, Argentinian official Horacio Elizondo insists Ronaldo played no part in his decision to dismiss Rooney.

04/07/2006: And there you have it England. Stop acusing Cristiano Ronaldo-Rooney is the one that did something wrong, intentional or not
04/07/2006: I still believe Cristiano had a hand in it, that wink to his officials says it all. And it seemed it was their intention throughout the match because things seemed way too weird and Christiano is not a very good actor and next time he wants to pull a stunt like that, make sure its not going to be aired internationally, because the whole world saw exactly what he did.

05/07/2006: It Rooneys fault for reacting and making the foul in the first place who care's if Ronaldo winked and annoyed him, rooney shouldn't have such a short fuse!We can't blame anyone but ourselves for our defeat- well maybe sven! We need to play more like a team and have a bit of team spirit, thats one thing Portugal do have!
