Red cards for referees

26/04/2006: Referees face expulsion from World Cup 2006 if they do not come up to scratch according to Fifa president Sepp Blatter.

The 23 whistlemen will be called together for a pre-tournament meeting in Frankfurt where they will be told of eight important criteria on which they have no room for error.

Time-wasting, mass dissent, over-the-top tackles and diving will be among the issues where Fifa will expect a strong line from their appointed officials.

Blatter said: "We have enough referees so if one does not behave really well there are replacements available.

"They can make an error but not an error about the protection of the players - they will be immediately sent to another level because we have to ensure the referees are focused."
