Real eye Alonso swoop
23/07/2006: Real Madrid have reportedly set their sights on Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, despite the recent capture of Emerson from Juventus.
New Real boss Fabio Capello completed a double raid of his former club to land Emerson along with Fabio Cannavaro, but he is continuing his search for new players as he looks to reshape the squad at the Bernabeu.
Cesc Fabregas has been one player heavily linked with a return to Spain, with his agent claiming that Real had made an offer for him, but the young Arsenal midfielder has said that he would prefer to stay in north London.
Now Capello has reportedly turned to Alonso as a player to help him bring back the glory days to the Bernabeu.
Recently elected Real president Ramon Calderon is reportedly ready to sanction a £20m offer for the Liverpool star and a deal worth £80,000 a week, which may prove too tempting for the 24-year-old who has said that he is happy in the north west.
Alonso moved to Anfield from Real Sociedad in 2004 in a £10.5m deal.
