Reading ace snubs Ghana

27/04/2006: Reading midfielder James Harper has snubbed an approach from Ghana to play at this season's World Cup.

The 25-year-old is eligible to play for the Black Stars with his mother having been born in Ghana however despite a direct plea from Ghana coach Ratomir Dujkovic Harper has decided not to take up the offer to play alongside Michael Essien in the heart of the Ghanaian midfield.

"My mum is from Ghana, but she moved over here when she was three, he revealed.

"I've never even been to Ghana. I can't speak any of the 32 languages they've got. I don't know the colour of their flag and it's not my country. I wouldn't feel right putting on the shirt.

"I know a lot of players do it and play for other countries, but I don't agree with that. I think you should play for the country where you are from. If I was born there and then came over to England, then fair enough. But I didn't and I am English."

Harper was an integral part of Reading record-breaking English Championship win and would have been an excellent addition to the Black Stars squad. A former Arsenal trainee he joined Reading in 2001 and has played almost 200 times for the Steve Coppell-managed side.
