Rafael Marquez

30/05/2006: Few Mexican players ever adapt to the conditions of English football. Even fewer go on to succeed in a talent-packed side such as European champions Barcelona.

But that is exactly the feat achieved by the Mexican captain Rafael Marquez.

The central defender has not only held down his position in the Barcelona side, but has improved dramatically as a defender, alongside Carlos Puyol.

Marquez was marked out for great things at a very young age and made his full international debut at the tender age of 17.

His subsequent performances for Mexico persuaded European sides to take a look at him. His versatility is a very valuable part of his game and Rafael has been known to take up positions in the midfield.

After an initial spell with French side Monaco, he then moved on to the Catalan giants, where he has prospered to become a formidable force in the European and world game.

Still only 27, Marquez should be at the pinnacle of his career during the World Cup.
