Racist countries to be deducted points

19/04/2006: Competing nations will be deducted points during the World Cup if any of their fans indulge in racist behaviour.

An automatic three-point deduction is seen by Fifa president Sepp Blatter as a fair deterrent against fans who subject opposing players to racial abuse.

New Fifa regulations which came into effect on April 4 state that from the start of next season club sides will be deducted three points for their first offence, six points for their second infringement followed by relegation for any further breaches.

Blatter said: "The regulations will also be applied for this World Cup."

"At the first sign (of racism) there will be a deduction of three points, then we are finished with the problems of discrimination." he added.

Many believe the regulations will be hard to apply with the system open to abuse by opposing supporters but the measure is seen by many as a major step forward in ensuring footballers have the right to ply their trade free of abuse.

Countries where racism plays a major part in the supporters culture include France, Italy, Spain and Poland.
