Premiership boost for US defender
09/05/2006: US international defender Cory Gibbs has been signed on a free transfer for Premiership side Charlton.
The 26-year-old left-sided wing-back has signed a pre-contract with the south London club and is expected to link up with the Addicks squad after the World Cup subject to obtaining a government permission.
He told the club's official website: "In the past week I've received interest from a number of top flights English clubs.
"Playing Premiership football has always been my dream and I was flattered to have such options, but having met with the representatives from Charlton I was hugely impressed with the chairman and his ambitious plans for the continued development of the club.
"I honestly believe I am joining a club that is ambitious and hungry for success."
Gibbs has played in Germany, Holland and the US and has been a professional since 2001.
Charlton is currently a managerless side following the departure of long-serving coach Alan Curbishley.
None of Charlton's current squad made the England World Cup squad though full back Luke Young is on their reserve roster.
