Portugal can progress

09/06/2006: Portugal defender Nuno Valente believes his nation's near miss in Euro 2006 can spur the team to greater things

The Everton defender played in the final of that championship with his side going down 1-0 to an unfancied but organised Greece.

Despite the disappointmet Valente who has struggled for most of the season at his new premiership club believes teams will give Portugal more respect for having reached the final and believes they can go one better iin World Cup 2006.

"I think we created a bit of a status in the last European Championship and that is very important because if you create a status, you can have ambition to create something more," he told The Evertonian.

"And you can do nothing better than the title. We have an ambition of doing even better than we did in the European Championships.

"We had great support from the Portuguese people then and I'm sure we will carry on having that great support during the World Cup."
