Poll heads home

29/06/2006: FIFA have announced that 14 referees have been sent home from the World Cup, with England's Graham Poll among them.

Poll came in for heavy criticism following his display in the group game between Australia and Croatia, when the Premiership ref booked Croatia's Josip Simunic three times before sending him off.

The 42-year-old was tipped as one of the candidates to officiate the final in Berlin on July 9, but now is on his way home after the controversial Group F encounter.

A statement from FIFA referees committee president Angel Maria Villar Llona revealed the news. The statement read: "Graham Poll is an exceptional referee and a great sportsman, who will be able to overcome the situation thanks to his strong personality and love of the game.

"The experienced official is disappointed at having committed the error, the first such mistake in his 26-year career."

Russian Valentin Ivanov, who issued a record 16 yellow and four red cards in Portugal's second round against Holland, is also one of the 14 officials going home.
