Podolski lands Fifa award
07/07/2006: Lukas Podolski has beaten off strong competition to win the Fifa young player of the World Cup after netting three goals for Germany.
The Polish-born Cologne striker found the back of the net against Ecuador in his country's final Group A game before firing a brace in the second-round clash with Sweden.
Podolski was up against players including Spain's Cesc Fabregas, Lionel Messi of Argentina and Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo for the award which was chosen by a 14-man panel following a fans' vote on Fifa's official website.
