Poborsky prepares in unusual fashion

09/04/2006: Czech Republic star Karel Poborsky has chosen an unusual route in order to secure selection for Germany 2006.

The former Manchester United midfielder has ped a division in the Czech League and has joined Ceske Budejovice where he not only plays but is general manager and part owner.

The Czech Republic's most capped player made the move after a troubled spell at Sparta Prague where he was fined for refusing to talk to the press and for shoving a journalist.

"The standard here is not much worse than the top division, and I still think I can be ready for the World Cup if I am playing here," he said.

Poborsky recently made the move a permanent one and is spending more time in a suit as a soccer strip.

"I am choosing staff to work with at the club, and I have plenty of power to decide on important things." he said in the Scotsman.

Czech coach Karel Bruckner is aware of the strange situation but believes his star winger could still make the World Cup.

He said: "I have spoken to Karel about his situation, and he is still in my World Cup plans. He knows how to look after himself, and he won't forget how to play football."

Karel Poborsky played for Manchester United between 1996 and 1998 following an exceptional Euro 96. His first team appearances were limited due to the emergence of David Beckham. He had spells with Benfica and Lazio before moving back to the Czech Republic.
