Brian McBride
04/04/2006: After a couple of false starts, the rise of Fulham's Brian McBride as a predatory striker has reflected the USA's rise as a serious threat to any team.
The Fulham striker was always successful in the US Major League Soccer (MLS) set up, making the All-Star team seven times.
He showed promise from early on, finishing his college career as the University of St Louis's all-time leading goal scorer.
That feat made him the US's hottest property and was picked first out of any college player in the 1996 MLS draft.
Brian then had difficulties making the leap from the US club system to the European leagues, returning to America after spells with German second division side Wolfsburg and then going out on loan to the Championship's Preston North End.
But his spell on loan at Everton in 2003 helped convince Fulham boss Chris Coleman that McBride was good enough to lead the line for his side and he is now prospering at Craven Cottage.
During the last World Cup, Brian was instrumental in steering the USA to the quarter final stage, with winning goals against Portugal and Mexico.
The USA are now fifth in Fifa's world rankings, ahead of the likes of France, England and Portugal.
