Phillipe Senderos

05/04/2006: Not only did Switzerland manage to finish second during the group qualification, but they came through a tough two-legged playoff against Turkey - a formidable location in which to play.

But an excellent defensive display in their 2-0 home leg victory helped them progress to the World Cup in Germany.

And at the heart of that Swiss defence was Arsenal's Phillipe Senderos.

Senderos is yet another of Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger's promising young finds.

Only just 21, he showed his maturity and took another leap forward during his performance at the centre of Arsenal's defence during their demolition of Juventus in the Champions League quarter finals.

Many regard Phillipe as a natural leader and Switzerland will certainly need him to organise their back four as they attempt to progress from a group containing neighbours France, who finished ahead of them during qualification.

Perhaps his greatest task will be attempting to keep tabs of his Arsenal team mate Thierry Henry when the two sides meet in Stuttgart on June 13th.

Ranked 35th in the world, Switzerland and Phillipe will fancy their chances against group rivals Togo and the Republic of Korea, who are placed just four places above them in Fifa's official list.
