Pedro Pauleta
10/04/2006: Strikers can often flatter to deceive and that has often been the case with Pedro Miguel Carreiro Resendes, known as Pauleta to the world's press.
Despite never finding real consistency in the club game, Pauleta has an enigmatic ability to score goals for his country Portugal, and overtook the great Eusebio as Portugal's most prolific marksman ever.
Starting out at Estoril, he moved over the Iberian border to play for Slamanca, helping the Spanish side reach the Primera Liga.
That was enough to earn him an international call up and a move to Deportivo La Coruna, where he hit the height of his career to date, winning the Spanish league in 2000 with the Galician side.
Since then he has moved to France, spending three seasons with Bordeaux and is currently with Paris St Germain.
It is for the national team that Pauleta really comes in to his own, however and during an astonishing qualification campaign, he knocked in 11 goals on his way to becoming the European competition's top scorer.
He even shined in Portugal's disappointing 2002 campaign, scoring a hat trick against Poland during Portugal's only win in the tournament.
