Jerzy Dudek

05/04/2006: After being Liverpool's hero during their penalty shoot-out victory against AC Milan to win the 2005 Champions League, there can be few things that Jerzy Dudek could do that would better that achievement.

But if anything can, going to the World Cup as Poland's number one goalkeeper is it.

Born in Rybnik to a miner, Dudek has come a long way through football, but the 33-year-old will be hoping that his footballing journey will take him to the finals in Germany before it ends.

After a disappointing early exit from the last World Cup finals, Poland laid on a brilliant qualification for the 2006 finals, only losing to England and winning all other matches.

Dudek's team only narrowly lost their final group game against England when they were beaten by a deft Frank Lampard goal after a sweeping England counter attack.

The Poles will be glad to head to Germany for the forthcoming World Cup, as the country has been the site for Polish success in the past. They finished a best-ever third during the 1974 finals held there.

Dudek must now compete for the goalkeeper's jersey with Artur Boruc, Celtic's man between the sticks.
