Ali Karimi
28/04/2006: Iran's attacking midfielder Ali Karimi is of real international quality, proved by the fact that he attracted interest from many European sides before moving to Bayern Munich.
Known both as The Wizard of Tehran and the Maradona of Asia, it was his mazy runs that earned him the title of Asian player of the year in 2004.
But tragedy nearly struck for both Karimi and the rest of the Iranian nation when the midfielder suffered an ankle injury during a club match against Hamburg.
Fears were immediately raised that he would not make the World Cup 2006, but after X-rays revealed there was no break to the ankle there was more hope that he would feature in Germany.
He has now begun light training and barring any relapses he will even be able to play for Munich again before the season is out.
His skill and darting runs make him a difficult proposition to play against and he is arguably Iran's most dangerous player when his dribbling is effective.
