Harry Kewell

03/04/2006: So long the hope of Australian football, some thought that we had seen the best of Liverpool's Harry Kewell.

After a long layoff with injury and rumours of depression, an aborted return during Liverpool's European Cup final appearance last season could have been the end for Kewell.

But the Sydneysider has a lot to thank club boss Rafael Benitez for, as the Liverpool manager kept faith in the winger while others had given up hope.

After finally finding an injury-free run Kewell has held down a regular place in the Liverpool starting eleven and his transformation has been one of the most dramatic and heart-warming in recent times.

A wondrous looping strike from 20 yards against Liverpool's arch rivals Everton marked the completion of Kewell's recovery and Australia's group rivals will be noting that Harry is coming good just in time for the tournament.

The Socceroos, who reached the World Cup finals after a playoff win against Uruguay, will be a serious threat now that Harry Kewell has overcome his troubles. At his best, he truly belongs on the world stage.
