Petit reveals United link

15/06/2006: Portugal star Armando Petit has revealed that Manchester United have offered him the chance to play at Old Trafford next season.

The 29-year-old played the first 72 minutes of Portugal's 1-0 success over Angola in their opening World Cup clash and is an important part of coach Luiz Felipe Scolari's squad as they target a place in the knock-out phase of the tournament.

United were keen to sign Tottenham's Michael Carrick last week but had their offer turned down by the north London club and have now turned their attentions to the Benfica man.

The former Boavista star still has four years to run on his current deal at the Stadium of Light but has been told by club officials that he is free to speak to the Red Devils about a possible switch to the Theatre of Dreams.

With rumours of possible transfers rife at this time of year the majority can be taken with a pinch of salt but the player himself has confirmed that Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to secure his services.

"Yes, it is true, I have received the offer of a contract from Manchester United," he revealed.

"Anyone would like to play for Manchester United. If a proposal appears for me and Benfica, I have the possibility to leave."
