Pele v Maradona

18/05/2006: Pele, star of Escape To Victory, believes only three teams have a realistic chance of winning the World Cup, but fears being the betting favourites may hinder his home nation Brazil.

Speaking to Sports Bild, he said: "Brazil are favourites and with that tag I don't think they can win. Favourites always lose.

"In 1982, Brazil were favourites and got beaten by Italy and Holland are always favourites and always lose."

"In 2002, it happened to France and in 1990, Argentina lost to Germany.

He added: "I never wanted Brazil to be favourites. We have to consider Germany as contenders. Italy are a good team and England, they have a great squad too."

Pele is considered the greatest player in the history of the game.

Comments on: Pele v Maradona

21/05/2006: Your article titled Pele Plays Down Brazil Bid dated May 18 2006 states in the final paragraph 'Pele is considered the greatest player in the history of the game.'I was shocked to see your website which is clearly dated in 2006 to be so out-of-date - 20 years after Maradona 'rocked the world' and included your own prejudice 'British footballing nation' - that you can degrade the integrity of your website by stating such an ambiguous fact so absolutely. It was clear that the writer of this article must also be British and for him I would especially like to request for the good of the worldwide footballing nation that read and rely on such media as these propaganda-flowing articles to please take your head out of your ass!Even though Maradona has been outcast by the world, he took a shabby Argentina side all the way to two World Cup Finals (along with dominating all the way from midfield to finish, frequently from even deeper in the field) whereas Pele played for the best team-roster on paper that ever existed in the history of football along with the role of only having to finish as a striker that what had been placed in front of him on a "silver platter". I do not even carry the burden of accurate journalism on my shoulders as I am not a sports writer but I am still wise enough not to 'shoot myself in the foot' by clearly stating the obvious - Maradona dethroned Pele 20 years ago.The writer is a disgrace to football because of one of the three following facts (or even perhaps all of them):1) He is a 'gimp' of the governing bodies of soccer and the media who have tried to shun Maradona out from the limelight that rightfully belonged to him and give him the role of the 'scapegoat' due to a fear of public association with 'evil', as they attempt to mask their scam-ridden system (for example, does anybody from the 'corruption-free' Fifa governing body ever publicise or mention the Mexican referee who admitted to being paid-off to give Germany the penalty kick in the dying moments of the 1990 World Cup Final that robbed the World Cup from Argentina's hands?). All this occurring simultaneously as Pele and Fifa share their symbiotic relationship unconditional worshipping and place this 'pet' in the front-line as Fifa's ambassador of this sport:2) The so-called 'writer' is unable to appreciate and differentiate talent on the field from shortcomings in a man that are off the field and possibly.. 3) The writer of this article is none other than the man (which I hesitatingly call him) Pele himself (who has never shied away from tooting his own horn).I ask for the good of football for your website to take action at the minimalist of levels by at least altering the last statement in this article; there should be penalties for stating fiction as fact since this was clearly not an opinion of the author; according to him this ridiculous inference is fact: Last time I checked, Maradona had won the worldwide internet voting as the best player in the world at the turn of the millennium.I would like to conclude by offering my knowledge of this great sport to your informationally challenged writer or perhaps even replacing him.Dr. Sangha

29/05/2006: I wholeheartedly disagree with Dr. Sangha's prejudiced statements. When a players performance may have been influenced by the use of substances (and cocaine is a stimulant), it it difficult to call him the greatest player. After all, no one referred to Ben Johnson as being the fastest man in the world after finding out that he used steroids. Pele had just as many pressures, was kicked about on the pitch and taunted just as much as Maradona - he just wasn't as weak. Dr.Sangha read way too much into a simple statement about how the man felt about Brazil's odds. By many, including those who were not even born when he was playing, Pele is still considered the best player in the world.

02/06/2006: I agree with Dr Sangha. Yes , I do. To the person who commented on the use of drugs by Maradona to enhance his performance...please note: Maradona declared his genius on the pitch way before he started using cocaine. As Gary Lineker said on TV, Diego Maradona's football skills are head and shoulders above any footballer's, ever. I also, agree with the Dr on Pele. Unfortunately, he's become Fifa's pet, el Nene lindo de Brazil. Shame.

07/06/2006: Diego Armando Maradona is the greatest footballing genius this planet has ever seen. Some American fans influenced by money-inspired campaigns always tend to belittle Diego Maradona's ability and since they write (and publish) a lot, there is an air being created that MAradona is the "bad-guy" of soccer, whereas Pele is the "good-guy". Misinformed individuals like the person above (29/05/2006) can lead the soccer-novices people to believe that MAradona can be compared to the same level as Ben Johnson!! Nothing can be further from truth!! Number one, Maradona RULED the entire world of soccer like an EMPEROR at a time when defenders were being termed "butchers" and "whackers", and delighted fans all over the world with his unimaginable and sublime skills WITHOUT the influence of any drugs whatsoever! His drug problem has NO relationship with his achievements. WHAT A Goeblesian LIE THIS IS!!! MAradona is unsurpassed in not one but almost ALL departments of the game, like dribbling, passing, vision, tackling, goal-scoring, positional sense, and he is undisputed KING of the BALL!! Those of you who are being amaed at Ronaldinho's (another great in the making of course) ball control and skills should know that Diego Maradona is still LEVELS higher than him!!! So please stop this nonsense. You do Pele no good by saying all these lies about Maradona!! Take any ONE of his achievements and you will know. He single handedly make Napoli FC ( a mediocre team) the Best in Italian football!! He DOMINATED the ENTIRE WC Mexico 1986 when there were other greats still present like Lineker, Platini, Zico, and Socrates!!! Most of all, FIFA's 2000 poll about the PLAYER of the CENTURY was won by Maradona by an overwhelming majority from fan-votes. Americans please get your facts straight or don't even dream that the soccer world will ever take seriously!!! Accept MAradona for what he was, what he IS: the GREATEST!!! - zee

08/06/2006: I agree with Zee, the campain against Diego is not fair at all... what he does in his private life is his businesss and not anybody else's, but not only the media loves to bring his personal problems out but also crucify him because of his anti-usa statements. gives a political dimention to his character..!! the truth is, he is the passion, the magic, the reason behind the fact that players and audience like football as much as they do now... every player wants to be him and every one wants to see a player that can do what he STILL can do on the field. that says a lot about Diego. peace. f

10/06/2006: I am an avid football fan for past 26 years. I came to know about Maradona in 1982 when I was 13 years old. I have not seen Pele playing but seen a few of his video clips. No doubt Pele was a great player , but to rate Maradona greater then Pele is justified keeping in view Maradona's vision, skill, speed, endurance and above all selflessness. He was a great schemer of a game. Pele was intelligent player but Maradona was intuitive. Pele knew where the ball is but Maradona always knew where the ball would be. Pele was logical and methodical in his approach towards the game but Maradona was transcendental and divinely mysterious . Pele had many great players in his team who fed him to score more often and I won't equivocate in saying that Pele never won the world cup single-handedly. Even without him his team won the world cup of 1962. But for Argentina Maradona was pre requisite to win the World Cup. To beat Argentina the opponents had to beat Maradona first. This manifests the inspiration that Maradona carried with himself and for his team members. Maradona had also had to bear the pressure of leading the World Cup and was the youngest captain at 24 to lift the trophy in 1986. Had Pele not played in 1958 and 1970 , Brazil should have won the World Cup but without Maradona Argentina's victory in 1986 was doubtful . Besides Pele mostly played in North America. But Maradona has shown his prowess in tough grounds and teams of Europe. The ability of Maradona was to make ordinary teams extraordinary such as of Napoli of Italy. Maradona was rather an alchemist who had uncanny ability of converting sand into gold. To me Maradona's second goal in the quarter-finals against England in Mexico 86 was the most blissful moment in the history of the game. Maradona was Sun tzu and the Napoleon of football. Pele was great but remember and never erase it from your memory as it is written on the sky that Maradona was the GREATEST .

13/06/2006: The above contribution to this discussion received on 10/06/2006 was excellently written by Mohammad Asim. Many thanks.

25/06/2006: To turn a blind eye to Maradona's cheating (drugs and the worst handball of all time) would do a disservice to the good and honest professionals whose careers overlapped his. He was a fantastic footballer who will always be remembered for being a cheat. His greatest moments will forever be tarnished. Such a shame.

02/07/2006: Maybe Zinedane Zidane turns out to be just as great... Anway - its always difficult to determine the best of all times. Football has changed over the years.

04/07/2006: Before now I have always believed Pele was the greatest football player on planet because of probably the love and passion that I have for Brazil but reading carefully the article written by Mohammad Asim, I am totally convinced and agreed that Diego Armando Maradona is the greatest football player of all time. The fact remains that the guy never took drugs until when the Italians lured him into it during his stay with Napoli FC. Before then, he has single handedly won the Mexico 86 world Cup. We should throw a beautiful away with the bad water rather, we should remove the beautiful baby, dress her neatly and throw the bad bathing water away. A beautiful baby will always be beautiful even if she rolled herself in the mud and once she is cleansed, she will remain beautiful. Maradona is beautiful. If you like, put him in the mud, he will come out beautiful always. Maradona is simply Fifa's beauty of the game and they know it but they also know they cannot play games with him unlike Pele who they have made their puppet idol. From Schilacchi, Lagos, Nigeria

05/07/2006: No matter how tactfully written, any article is, any writer who declares Maradona as a better player than Pele is simply void of any soccering historical knowledge. Maradonna was truly a spectacular "fall guy" and mostly a cheat though I must admit he did actually possess some talent. They player in two different eras and under different conditions but Pele shone in the days when it was customary for teams to place three or four defenders on skillful players with the intention to maim them, render them ineffective and get away with it. Maradonna shone at a time when FIFA was still trying to decide what to do with the whole "fall guy tactic, something that he made famous and still plagues the game to this day. A couple of years later and he would have been sent off more often rather than earn free kicks. It is clear that the pro-Maradonna contributors have little or no knowledge of Pele's skills. Very sad for them indeed.

05/07/2006: To those who would place Maradonna above Pele as the greatest footballer of all time they can only refer to Maradona's tainted performance in Mexico 1986. The conditions in Mexico were very favourable to the South American entrants. Maradona had completed His first world cup finals in Spain 1982 in disgrace following a red card against Brazil. Pele on the other hand, had finshed his first world cup finals as a seventeen year old superstar following two goals against Sweden in the 1958 final played in Europe. Pele's last world cup finals in Mexico ended in triumph. Maradona's last world cup finals in the USA ended in dishonour with a doping charge. To evaluate a players' ability you must take into account ball skills, character, mental strength and team work. Maradonna certainly edges Pele on individual dribbling skills, but his shooting, passing, heading and off the ball movement is a shade behind Pele. Finally, Pele was celebrated as the World's most gifted player from 1958 until 1970. Maradonna can only claim world domination at the '86 world cup.

15/07/2006: Diego is the greatest football player of all time. Pele was ok. There's no comparison between the two,Diego is God and Pele human. Diego kept it real despite his drug problems which I believe have nothing to do with his skills and his knowledge of the game. Pele on the other hand is a snitch, FIFA's toy for propaganda. You can clearly see why the fans voted Diego as the greatest ever and FIFA vote their puppet Pele as their greatest player.

25/07/2006: Basing on the amazing skills and discipline on and off the field Pele was the greatestMaradona was a digrace to soccer

04/08/2006: 1st thing about an internet poll it is used by young people who have never seen Pele play, as many old people do not use the internet this is why Maradona won the award.2ndly it is not Peles fault that Brazil had the best team ever and if anything if he stands out from such a team this makes him even better. Argentina won the 78 World Cup without Maradona and also qualified for the 90 Final whilst he was too flabby to even play. The 86 World Cup was won as this was played in South America where only two teams are going to win anyway. Pele helped Brazil win in EUROPE in 1958, still the only team to win outside its continent, all this at just 17.Much of what people say about Maradona being better is based around exposed TV coverage which was not around regularly in Peles early career. If Maradona made Napoli a better team then what Pele did to Santos was almost superhuman (9 league titles in 13 years)in what is a team which barely stands as one of the greats in Brazil.Having 1 world cup and a few good seasons doesnt compare with a career of 1300 or so goals, 3 world cups and a 15 year career at the top. By the time Maradona was 30 he was playing in the Spanish 2nd division. Napoli also went 26 games unbeaten after his drug ban, where he boasted they would be relegated without him.

06/08/2006: As a Nigerian, I disagree that he is the world's best. The last international game he played was against Nigeria in USA 94. They beat Nigeria 2-1. Infact he was the architect of both goals which were scored the same way. With an ephedrine enhanced leg, he fires the freekick into the cool hands of Rufai who s the ball as a result of the drug force, into the speedy legs of Claudio Cannigia who wastes no time in shaking the net. (Twice). Fifa suspected and tested him after that match and it was confirmed he was on drugs. That was the best team ever to come from Nigeria and it was a shame we lost 2-1 to a cheat of a team in the colours of Argentina. I'd rate our Okocha before him. Pele is the best, if not, then ZIDANE.

13/08/2006: maradona is the GOD of football where pele is a footballer may be the greatest but there is no comparison between God and human

21/08/2006: Maradona is a brilliant footballer. He won the world cup single handedly. He always played for a team which have no strong line up. But what he did in 1986 was absolutely divine. The way opposite teams fouled him was really disgusting. If he would have the environment of modern fair play he would unstoppable

22/08/2006: to all you fools who think PELE is the greatest, you are just a bunch of jealous fools.....maradonna was in a classs of his own....never in a million years did PELE have ability nad class like maradonna.. so to you yanks who know nothing bout football or you call soccer, and u jealous english just shut up....Pele relied on his team mates to inflict his so called great goals where maradonna did it all by himself.....forget about the corupt FIFa ratings. The public voted for maradonna being the greatest player ever. and the public speaks for football, not bloody FIFA and all u PELE foolish supporters...Maradonna use to dribble the ball from the defence area and take it all to the opposition's goal, like against england in 86. DID PELE score a goal like that. PLease dont make me laugh......get a life. DIEGO ARMANDO MARADONNA let your legend live in peace...zobondo

26/08/2006: Was pele part of the brazilian giant squad who won the cup for three times ? YES.Was MARADONA part of the argentine team who only won it once ? YES......but hang on,What would have happened in the 1990 final if that penalty was never given to the germans? After all the referee admitted being paid off to allow that. And how come Maradona was tested for doping in 1994 when he had probably one of the best argentine squads ever beside him ? And how many other players where tested ?Answer;MARADONA was probably stripped off from winning two other world cup titles.PELE ? Yes he was huge and unbeatable, but to say that maradona's talent was enhanced by drugs is SWEARING. Some folks should get hold of the guy's skills as a kid and then......well then i'm sure you'll have a different opinion.WHAT'S GOOD IS GOOD and you can't change that.MC Malta

13/09/2006: If scoring goal is the only measurement of being great, then why not Ronaldo is regarded better talent than Ronaldinho. though Ronaldo scored highest goals in world cup, golden boot and golden ball in two world cup.Even jidane is regarded better fotballer than romario, ronaldo. So why MARADONA is not better than pele.

21/09/2006: how can u say zidane is greater than ronaldo are u insane is it because he had problems in the past ronald 4 mw is the best after maradona

20/11/2006: diego armando maradona is greatest foot baller on this planet.

10/01/2007: well guys i think that you all are very very wrong about these two men..... Or i should say immortals as how drunkensoccerdotcom discribe them in drunkensoccer:feinting "the art or soccer deception" The world will never see greatness at these levels again! Pele stands alone and maradona stands alone! Pele dribbles solo also, maradona too, but i have never seen maradona take a shoot at goal from behind the half line and almost score! i have seen and studied these gods from i was 10yrs old and i can strongly say there in no information on this planet about these two gods i don't know! So guys the real trick is who was crowned King of the Game! Who ran through/under flags from all over the countries of the soccer world! Who kept their immortallity! and chose/pick to remain a god rather than a meer man! P= patient, people, postive, polite E=endurance, eternally, energy L= loyalty, love, E= End of greatness and the birth of the soccer future. PELE The future that maradona falls into, if you don't know maradona saw pele playing the world cup!! and idolized him.... and the rest is a secret for the Gods to share... with humans.

19/01/2007: to those who keep a great jelousy on AMANDO MARADONA..its wise if all of you go back to school and watch how briliant maradona was. he himself dribbled the ball in front of all england players in world cup 1986. who else can do the same like maradona? pele isnt a skillful player.he was only a good scoorer and fast runner!!!!!!. MARADONA did everything.he was the perfect dribbler, great controller and best striker ever in the world.

19/01/2007: maradona is the best! no one else like him.

19/01/2007: i believed that MARADONA was created to be the GOD of football history...then because of his divine traits, he was blessed with the most extreme talent and flair in football history. not just being given with unlimited skill and talent in football but he also was the chosen one on the earth to be the greatest player ever..do you know the evidence of THE MARADONA'S divine????the reason is, on the earth history of football he is?was the most memorable one and the most controversial one too.he is the only player in this world ever scored a goal by hand..WHO ELSE CAN DO THE SAME??? even your pele wwill absolutely never has the talent and wisdom to do the same. pele is great but still couldnt match the MARADONA'S talent in football...if your still disagree with me then ask any organizer to re-do the vote. surely i believed that the result will belong to maradona.YOU KNOW WHY?BEcause Maradona was the only player that has the ability to dribble the ball from the meddle of the field till the ball touch the net..who else can do like that...please use your mind buddy..he was the only one who blessed with perfect skill and talent in football..his personal problems shouldnt be calculated in his footbal career.football is football.MARADONA IS ALWAYS ALIVE FOR PEOPLE-----dont cry for me ARGENTINA-----

19/01/2007: IT was DEOSNT MATTER EVEN IF maradona scored by ysing his but..the thing here is, he was/is the greatesr footballer ever in the world.if pele was the best then why much people still love maradona so much..coz maradona is the god of football while pele is only a footballer.

26/01/2007: Pele was one of the best players for his time, but Maradona was a GOD. He will forever be in the hearts of millions of fans all over the world. Maradona played on teams that were mediocre and turned them into gold. He also played in Europe during a time when futbol was at its best. Pele never made that transition to Europe. Anyone who says that Brazillian futbol is better than European does not know what they are talking about. I love Pele, but I would even go as far as saying that Garrincha was a better player.

05/02/2007: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFgkzOSBA2sGo to this website if you think Pele cant dribble and is only a good scorer and fast runner. Maradona is certainly not a fast runner and in a career certainly not a good goal scorer (not exceptionally great 1 in 3 for Argentina). AND if you want to say Pele is a striker though and they score more see how much of his work is done deep and not just in front of goal. He makes many of his uncomparable goal rate. You young kids are manipulated by press where players get overrated due to media exposure ie. Maradone, Beckham and Best.

17/02/2007: To compare this 2 great players of all time(which i belive that is no present players, even Ronaldinho or Zidane can surpass them)we need to find out from ppl who saw both Pele and Maradona played during their time.(i was not born yet though)I do find out 2 person who actually saw them played,my father and his best friend whom are at their 60s.My father is a Fanatic Brazilian fan{he can even sleeps with Brazilian jeysey),his fren is an England one.I asked them lots of details on the 2 players and of course compare them and why they choose. To my surprise my father who is a Brazil fan, choose Maradona to be the best player of all time.He told me that nearly everything was close between them, then the question came.If you got the chance to play a soccer game against the best team in ur country which the odds of ur team to win is only 1/100,which one of this two players(pele or maradona)do u choose? So thats the reason my father gave. And for another shocking my father s fren an england fan picks maradona too.why? He says after the Hand of God Goal against england. He was angred at first but come to think of it,a true genious can only do that.Pele Vs Maradona?Well...............DIEGO ARMANDO MARADONAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.........

21/02/2007: france hardly stormed the world at the end of platini's reign in football, platini never lifted the world cup trophy,it was the emergence of zidane that brought france to limelight again, with a world cup trophy ,imagine what the great lizarazu said about him, that when the team is confused all the players do is just to give zidane the the ball to perform his archival magics, what else makes a man a super man, ronldinho has to work harder and consisitenly if he hopes to match zidane, zidane retired with the award of the best player at the world cup,how many old guys can do that ,he is just a genius, and you cant get him in many generations, was ronaldinho not there when zidane's magic took brazil to the cleaners.

24/04/2007: l will be very honest guys. Pele was a genius on the soccer field but Diego Armando Maradona is simply incomparable. He overcame his disadvantage in height with unmatched skill, power and speed and above all God-given confidence. Nor wonder why Hugo Morales cried in 1986 "Which planet do you come from, barilette cosmico...". Maradona is an art of God. It is God showing the world what wonders he can create.

17/05/2007: Pele got the help of greats like Tostao,Garincha and other greats.Pele didn't play the full WC for the years 1958 and 1962(where Garincha won the cup for Brazil). In 1970 WC Brazil could have won without Pele. So Pele never contributed as much as Diego did for Argentina's success in 1986 and 1990. Moreover he took Nepoli to heights from a low grade side.Diego's record show that he single handedly took any side to victory and that too at the highest standards.Diego played at a time where defensive soccer gained grounds.Could Pele ever replicate the solo goals diego scored against England and Belgium in 1986 WC?Cocaine can never help in enhancing skills.Maradona is all about skill and ball control.Diego Maradona is not just the greatest ever but will be best till football lives.

31/05/2007: Pele is better than Maradona, in any and many words

01/06/2007: Pele is not a 'gimp' of fifa or the media; he is trying to do promote positive images for children and for football to those who do not know the sport. Maradona..... I won't even go into that, lets just say you wouldn't trust him with the keys to your house but we are here to talk about they're talent. Both were amazing period! Pele was a better goal scorer and team player, while Maradona was physically stronger and had better ball handling skills. The sole reason I say Pele is better is the fact that Maradona blatantly cheated to win the World Cup. Disagree with me then check out the Wikipedia image of "Hand of God."

09/07/2007: Pele is the better the Maradona. I respect Maradona and won't say he couldn't play football, but he doesn't compare much with Pele.

03/08/2007: I strongly disagree.Maradona is the all time greatest player of the worls and thats the truth.try to realise the truth. I love brazil and i have loved them from the early years of my life. But stil i think maradona is the gretes ever to run through the football fields. His skill was unbelievable.I myself has played district level football and have been coached by 4 verry good national standard coaches. They all have said "if you want to be a complete footballer see maradona play". he is the gem , the kohinoor.I have seen pele playing (I have almost all the games CDs with me of pele and maradona) and i hv also seen maradona in the field. As a football lover and player i rank maradona higher than pele just because of his mobility, game controle, positioning, single mindedness and last but not the least his skills. Some of the skills that he used to manage was so amazing that once rud gullit said himself ,"No one in this world can perform those skills in the playing field"He was the greatest guys . Just know itthis is the truth.

30/08/2007: Maradona is the best. He is simple a unbelievable footballer. Pele is more like a king on the paper, his number looks good. Although his 1281 goal include non-competitive game. Muller from Germany had score 1455 goal during his career which is more than Pele.

21/09/2007: As a Nigerian, i am suppose to be angree with maradona bundling our Super eagles to a 2-1 defeat in USA 94. But we must call a spade a spade, Diego maradona is THE GREATEST footballer of all times.Based on my reasons below:1)After being hunted by defenders wherever he plays, he proved himself in the 2 BIGGEST and TOUGHEST footballing leagues in the world (La liga and Serie A).2)He proved that a tree can indeed make a forest (Mexico '86 and the Napoli team)3)ALL his team mates (Careca, Schuster, valdano, Buruchaga, Passarella, Ferrara), opponents (Zico, Platini,Baresi, keegan, Lineker) and fans will justify the sheer joy in watching the little guy with the 10 shirt.4) For those of you that dont know your history, the second goal against England in Mexico 86 was not the first time diego ANNIHILATED the English defence, in 1981 in a friendly against the same England at WEMBLY, Diego did the same solo run but did not dribble the keeper (Clemence) but tried to place the ball only for it to drift millimeters away from the net. The night before the mexico match, diego's brother reminded him to dribble the keeper thsi time around!!!!!!!!!!! ONLY THE GREATEST COULD REPEAT THAT.5) Pele being not so sure about himself refused a BLANK CHEQUE to join Real Madrid (De Stefano, Kopa, Puskas, etc. HE WAS AFRAID OF COMPETITION.6) SANTOS AND COSMOS are not the teams that the so called greatest will dwell at!!!!!!!!!!!I am just previlaged to have been around to enjoy the mesmerizing skills of Don Diego. (Ahmed, kano, Nigeria.)

24/09/2007: Maradona. For those who voted for Pele, have you ever watch at least three full games of Pele? not hightlight. You don't know what you are voting for without doing that. 1958 world cup's game is more like amateur game. Pele also played most of his career in Brazil state level league.

22/10/2007: all this talk about maradona playing in tough leagues is ridiculus. Pele had great physical strength, stamina and could easily cope in any tough league. He played in a time where defenders would get orders to chop opponent strikers and get away with it, where yellow cards did not exist!...Yes, maradona was the main reason Napoli became Italian champions, but Pele was the main reason Santos became brazilian champ 9 times, libertadores 2 times and world champions 2 TIMES beaten the best European teams. He also made brazil champion in Sweden with 6 goals in 4 games as a 17 year old!!! It’s a real pity he was injured in 1962, and 1966 or we would have seen more of him.Maradona had to CHEAT in order to win in Mexico 1986 and in 1990 argentina advance by the help of amazing goalkeeper Goycoechea through penalty shoutouts where maradona even missed one penalty. Haha pele was afraid of competition?!! Pele played next to Garrincha, THE BEST DRIBBLER of all time according to many, and brazil never lost a game with them in its lineup. Pele surpassed all his contemporaries, teamates or opponents and everyone knows that.Maradona was afraid of competition in his own team one could say though, or else he would join Milan, Juventus, Real Madrid, or stay in Barca instead of clubs like Napoli and Sevilla!

22/10/2007: Pele is the best ever! nothing can change that!from wikipedia:"Ultimately, on 22 August 2005 Maradona acknowledged on his television show that he hit the ball with his hand purposely, and that he immediately knew the goal was illegitimate. He recalled thinking right after the goal that"“ I was waiting for my teammates to embrace me, and no one came . . . I told them, 'Come hug me, or the referee isn't going to allow it.'[9] his skill was not enough to win a world cup apparently!!

01/04/2008: Maradona vs who?

07/04/2008: Pele a legend!! loved the game, played with his heart, done things that had never been attempted. ask the players themselves pele will come out on top!

05/05/2008: I dont think if anybody asked honestly, without giving their emotions to make deceision , just honestly considering talent and dominance in the game can vote pele over maradona. I watched lots and lots of videos, slow motions whole game. and I find no reoson how come people say pele is better than maradona. I think even the biggest pele supporters know by their inner judgement as a player maradona was better(without considering his personal life). just because of their love and support for pele they put him on top of maradona. I am not brazilian or argentinian not even south america. just a soccer fan from asia. I support netherlands in International soccer. so i dont need to be biased towards anyone of them. And I feel funny how people like to say pele is better than maradona.
