Pekerman resigns

01/07/2006: Jose Pekerman has resigned following Argentina's quarter-final defeat to Germany, apologising to the fans for the result.

The South Americans were the favourites with some pundits following their impressive displays in the group stages, but it was the hosts that went through to the last four at their expense after a penalty shoot-out.

Pekerman came in for some criticism following his substitutions in the second half of the Berlin encounter, replacing both playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme and main striker Hernan Crespo.

The 56-year-old coach made an instant decision after the game to leave the post, saying: "This has come to an end and I will certainly not go on.

"You have to make a decision and I'm convinced I've done everything in my reach, and it's time to look for something else.

"I'm very sorry for the coaches and the fans and the players, this team deserves to go further but we couldn't make it."

Speaking about the game, Pekerman added: "It was a very exciting match. We also played like favourites and gave our best although we lost.

"The penalties were a consequence of a very even match."
