Pekerman pleased with fringe players

22/06/2006: Argentina boss Jose Pekerman was happy with the performance of his fringe players after they secured top spot in Group C.

Pekerman made a number of changes to his starting line-up for the Holland clash as he wanted to protect his stars who were on a yellow card, with qualification for the knockout stages already assured.

Despite the changes Argentina secured the necessary point to top Group C with a goalless draw in Frankfurt but they were rarely troubled by the Dutch and looked as though they were playing in cruise control for most of the game.

Pekerman said: "The Dutch are a difficult team and players like (Gabriel) Milito, (Fabricio) Coloccini, (Leandro) Cufre and (Julio) Cruz had their debut and didn't have any problems.

"They did what they had to do in the match without any problem.

"I think that all the players in the squad are ready to play at any moment."

Argentina now face Mexico in the second round in Leipzig on Saturday and Pekerman is relishing a tough battle.

"Mexico are a tough team like all the ones that we have played against up until now," he said.

"The only difference is maybe that we know Mexico a little bit more than all the rest because we have played many times against them.

"We know the way in which their coach thinks and we even know many of their players.

"Besides all what we know about Mexico, you can't say anything before playing any game.

"You have to plan what you want to do and then try to get the match sorted out as best as possible."
