Paraguay lose veteran striker

06/06/2006: There was shattering news for Paraguay when it was announced veteran striker Jose Cardozo will miss this year's World Cup through injury.

The 35-year-old Cardozo had been expected to lead the line against England in their opening group game on Saturday in the Waldstadion in Frankfurt but a recurrence of an old calf injury has forced him to pull out with Paraguay expected to name his replacement shortly.

A statement from the Paraguayan Football Association read: "Jose Cardozo has suffered an injury involving a pulled calf muscle on his left leg with a bruise in the affected area."

Paraguay's leading goalscorer of all time, Cardozo has played in two World Cup finals and also represented his nation at the Olympic Games in Athens.

Possible replacements include César Ramírez, Santiago Salcedo but more likely Genoa forward Dante Lopez.
