Owen's World Cup agony

21/06/2006: A scan has revealed that Michael Owen will be sidelined for five months after damaging his cruciate ligaments in the game with Sweden.

Owen picked up the injury just minutes into the Group B decider in Cologne, when he fell awkwardly under no challenge whatsoever before being carried off on a stretcher.

The 26-year-old was taken to a German clinic on Wednesday morning to confirm the extent of the damage, with the result confirming that he faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
