Oranje boost for van Basten

08/06/2006: Marco van Basten is hopeful of having a fully fit Dutch squad to pick from in their opening game of the World Cup campaign against Serbia.

Rafael van der Vaart, Wesley Sneijder, Philip Cocu, Kew Jaliens, and Giovanni van Bronckhorst had all been doubts for Oranje over the past week but all according to the boss are making significant progress.

Van Basten said: "I have good hopes that I can use a fully-fit squad against Serbia."

Although Sneijder and Cocu trained separately to the main squad in the student town of Freiburg in front of 15,000 onlookers van Basten remains upbeat about their fitness.

"I don't think that they will be a problem for me on Sunday," added the coach.

Van Basten will only send the standby player Nigel de Jong and Stijn Schaars home when he is certain they won't be called upon.

"I don't want to keep them here any longer than needed. They have planned their holidays so if I can, I will send them off," he said.
