Olof Mellberg

07/06/2006: If England are to make it out of their qualifying group unscathed, they will have to find a way past Olof Mellberg.

The Swedish captain is known as a strong defender and will be familiar to the England players as he has played his football for midlands side Aston Villa since 2001.

Then Villa manager John Gregory paid £5 million for the Swede, who has proved to be an excellent servant to the club.

The 29-year-old should provide some steel to a Swedish team that has more attacking options than any other Swedish side produced, with the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrik Larsson and Freddie Ljungberg set to test the English back four.

Don't bet on Olof when it comes to penalties however. He missed his spot kick in the quarter finals of the 2004 European Championships in his country's loss to the Netherlands.

He won't have to take one during the group stages, however, and Sweden look odds on to beat Trinidad and Tobago and Paraguay to help them into the next stage.
