Miguel wants top spot

19/06/2006: Portugal defender Miguel has said the side are determined to end the group stages on a high with a win over Mexico.

The Euro 2004 finalists have already booked their passage through to the knockout stages with earlier wins over Angola and Iran and will meet either Argentina or Holland in the second round.

However, Miguel insists the team will not be taking it easy and says they will be going for the victory to claim top spot in Group D and earn an extra day's rest before the last 16 clash.

"It is a game we want to win. Our objective is to finish first.

"We want to secure first place so we get more days to prepare for the following game."

Miguel also insisted that Mexico is still a team to fear despite the absence of star striker Jared Borgetti who has been sidelined for the clash with a thigh strain.

"Mexico have other players who can play instead of Borgetti. They are always a dangerous team," he said.

"Captain Rafael Marquez is a big influence. He has quality."
