Midfielder hails van Basten influence
20/06/2006: Midfielder Rafael van der Vaart claims the team spirit and unity in the Holland World Cup camp is all down to coach Marco van Basten.
Since their 1988 European championships success in Germany, Holland have always found their bids to emulate that glory at major competitions thwarted by fallings out and disharmony amongst their ranks. However 18 years on and in the same country, it appears that van Basten has managed to find the correct style of management to ensure his players are all fighting for the same cause.
As a result the Dutch are already certain of a second round place ahead of Wednesday's Group C decider against Argentina and van der Vaart feels the players sticking together can give them a realistic chance of World Cup glory.
The Hamburg star said: "The team spirit has really improved a lot and now it is very special to be part of this team.
"Van Basten is also a younger coach than his predecessors and is close to the squad. He knows exactly what is going on and what we need."
