Michael Owen
08/05/2006: Although he has been out for the whole of 2006 with a broken metatarsal bone in his foot, it is a sign of Michael Owen's importance that few doubted that he would be named in the England squad to go to Germany.
The striker is known as a very intelligent striker, exploiting space and regularly managing to slip the attention of centre backs.
He has also shown he can score on the big stage, with a memorable goal against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup in France.
Even if he is not fully fit, Owen will be an important element in an England team that is packed with talent in the midfield, but looks slightly lightweight up front.
He has scored wherever he has played, which has included a stint at Spanish giants Real Madrid. Owen finished his only season with them as the player with the best minutes to goals ratio in the league.
Many believe that Madrid should have kept hold of the striker, but Owen was keen to play regularly in a World Cup season, so decided on the switch to Newcastle United last summer.
He was scoring goals as normal before the injury. He should be back to full health by the time the World Cup starts, but England's eyes will be on him to see if he has that crucial match fitness needed at the top level.

09/06/2006: I think Micheal Owen is what we call here in North America a money player. He will score in a crucial moment.
14/06/2006: Has anyone noticed how the other England players, when questioned about Michael Owen, all say practically the same thng: "Michael Owen is a proven goalscorer, his record speaks for itself, & he'll come good", which, roughly translated means "Michael Owen is past his best but he's our mate so he plays."
28/06/2006: I'm so, so sad that Michael Owen's injured.
