Blessed are the playmakers

21/05/2006: Mexico's 23-man squad received a blessing from on high before setting off on their adventure to Germany for Mundial 2006.

The team received a blessing from the Catholic Cardinal Norberto Rivera at a specially arranged mass for Ricardo La Volpe's side attended by thousands of fans.

"You are the centre of attention for many who admire you," Rivera said to the 21 players in attendance.

"Carry the colours of the flag with pride."

Each player was presented with pictures of the Virgin of Guadalupe, Mexico's most holy image while the cardinal was given a signed ball.

Football chants broke out throughout the church before the players headed to the airport to fly to Paris to meet up with the two European-based players including their captain and recent winner of a Champion League medal Rafael Marquez, the Barcelona star.

Mexico have never progressed past the quarter final stage but face a seemingly easy group stage where they will play Portugal, Iran and Angola.

Mexico's first World Cup game is against Iran in Nuremburg on Sunday June 11.
