Metzelder looking for home support

12/06/2006: Germany defender Christoph Metzelder hopes the home fans will help the hosts overcome their obvious shortcomings.

The 26-year-old was part of the back line that looked frail against Costa Rica in the opening game, although Germany went on to win 4-2.

The German media has been highly critical of Germany's vulnerability at the back but the fans have got behind the team following the exciting curtain-raiser, which was the highest-scoring in tournament history.

The Borussia Dortmund centre-half, who has only recently returned to fitness following a long lay-off since the 2002 World Cup, believes the support from the German fans will help the team to a successful tournament this time around.

"For us to be successful, we need a good team spirit, a lot of luck and a big deal of patriotism," Metzelder said. "It was overwhelming to see the support on the streets. That is something we need.

"The World Cup four years ago was completely different. Now it is up to us to create a certain atmosphere which will help us overcome a few deficits."
