Mertesacker injury blow
06/07/2006: Germany centre-back Per Mertesacker will miss Saturday's World Cup third/fourth place play-off against Portugal through injury.
The Hannover defender picked up a heel injury during the host's semi-final defeat to Italy on Tuesday and officials say an operation is required to solve the problem.
German football federation spokesman Harald Stenger revealed: "Mertesacker has left the World Cup base in Berlin and will undergo heel surgery."
The defensive reshuffle is expected to see Middlesbrough-bound Robert Huth partner Christoph Metzelder against Portugal in Stuttgart.
