Maxi Rodriguez
24/06/2006: He could have played for Italy but every Argentina fan around the world will be glad Maxi Rodriguez chose to play his football for the Albicelestes.
An attacking midfielder cum striker, Rodriguez was an integral part of his nation's win in the 2001 World Youth Championship and it was his performances in that tournament which persuaded Spanish La Liga club Espanol where he spent three seasons before transferring to Atletico Madrid at the start of the 2005/6 season.
The Rosario-born player was an important member of the squad who qualified for World Cup 2006 and made his mark on the tournament when scoring two goals in his sides 6-0 win over Serbia and Montenegro.
With his side drawing with Mexico in the last sixteen match on June 24 in Leipzig, Maxi produced a stunning volley to put his side into a 2-1 lead in the first half of extra time.
La Fiera, as he is known, has made his mark on this World Cup and could take his side to eventual victory if reproducing the skills he has shown to date.
