Mascherano warns against complacency

19/06/2006: Argentina midfielder Javier Mascherano has warned his team-mates against complacency ahead of the Holland clash on Wednesday.

The South Americans have looked the most impressive team in the World Cup so far following their 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast and the 6-0 demolition of Serbia and Montenegro and many now see them as the team to beat in Germany.

Mascherano, who has been impressive in the midfield for La Albicelestes, has urged the side to ignore the fact they have already qualified and go all out for the win so that they top Group C.

"It's a great test even though we have already clinched qualification," the 22-year-old said. "We must treat this game with respect, as if we needed the points. In the last 16, things will be even more difficult.

"It'll be a very interesting match because both teams are focused on the other's goal.

"I think that when you have so many good players from midfield onwards, you know the team can decide a match in any moment. That's the calmness people at the back have."

Argentina will know who their opponents in the second round will be by the time they take the field on Wednesday but Mascherano insists the team is fully focussed on Holland.

"We cannot talk about Mexico or Portugal. First is our Wednesday game and we're focused on that," he added.
