Mark Viduka

10/05/2006: At 30, Australian front man Mark Viduka seems to be in the form of his life.

It has always been clear that the striker had great footwork and the ability to embarrass defenders, but there have always been question marks over his attitude with some supporters accusing him of laziness in the past.

Viduka arrived in the English Premiership in a £6 million move from Celtic to Leeds. Then manager David O'Leary must have noted that the big forward had the ability to hold off defenders as well as go past them.

He didn't disappoint the Elland Road crowd, scoring 22 goals in each of his first two seasons for the club.

Fans turned on him during the following campaign, when Leeds were relegated and the Aussie was sent off in a crucial game.

Not prepared to leave the Premiership, Viduka moved to Middlesbrough, where he has returned to some excellent form, although he has also been hampered with injury problems.

His goals have been a big part in Boro's route to the Uefa Cup final.

This summer's World Cup will give Mark, as captain and wearer of the classic numer 9 shirt, a chance to strut his stuff on the biggest stage, although he nearly cost his side a place at the finals after missing a penalty during the play-off shoot out against Uruguay.

Comments on: Mark Viduka

28/06/2006: Mark has very good footwork and physical prescence, however, his real lack of scoring as a capped player (6 Goals in more than 30 caps) is a big mark against this guys name. A great player at club level, but Mark needs to stretch himself more at an international level. He would most likely be better played in another position, while making room for more of Australia's other real striking potential.

04/07/2006: "I would not be bothered if we lost every game as long as we won the league." - Mark Viduka.
