Young Socceroo up for award

22/05/2006: Won in previous tournaments by players such as Pele, Michael Owen and Franz Beckenbauer, Socceroo Mark Milligan has been highlighted as a possible winner of the young player of tournament known as the Best Young Player Award.

The 20-year-old has represented Australia at two previous World Youth tournaments and has been a regular in the Sydney FC since returning from a recent hernia operation.

Milligan caught the eye of Socceroo assistant coaches Johan Neeskens and Graham Arnold on the Australian U23 tour of Vietnam and is regarded highly as a right-back, centre-half and possibly as a holding midfielder - very much in the mould of England utility man Jamie Carragher.

When learning of his call-up Milligan was understandably delighted.

"It is unbelievable," Milligan said. "It is a dream come true to go to Germany and I am still struggling to come to terms with it.

"I have been to two U20 World Cups and pulling on the Australian shirt is the best feeling as a player and to think I am going to wear the shirt at the World Cup is unbelievable. I still can't believe it."
