Liverpool close to double swoop

18/07/2006: Liverpool are reportedly closing in on the signing of Feyenoord's Dutch striker Dirk Kuyt and Sevilla's Brazil defender Daniel Alves.

Reds boss Rafa Benitez has been chasing Kuyt all summer, but was struggling to meet the £13.75million asking price that Feyenoord had placed upon the player. However a report in Tuesday's Daily Mail suggests the Holland international has a £10.3million release clause which has given Liverpool renewed hope.

The player, who has also been targeted by Premiership rivals Newcastle, has been given an extra seven days off pre-season training to make a decision on where his future lies, but the Reds are now confident of wrapping up a deal before the end of the week.

Meanwhile Benitez is hopeful that one more round of talks should finally bridge the gap in their efforts to sign Sevilla right-back Alves. Liverpool are willing to pay £8million, while the Uefa Cup winners want around £12million, but the La Liga side's president Jose Maria Del Nido recent admission that the two sides were 15% away from a deal.

Alves would arrive at Anfield as direct competition for current right-back Steve Finnan, who has made the position his own in the two years Benitez has been in charge at Anfield.
